If it can swim, fly or run away from you, eat it.
If it can't, but it is natural and grows out of the ground, and is not much different than our great-great-great-great-good-great grandparents were able to grow, then eat less of it.
Bet you never heard it said that way before??
If you did then you have probably been to my office or you had a bad dream?
Animals that can move are not the same as plants that can not.
It really should not be that difficult a concept to grasp.
Animals that move are composed of different shall I say internal structures than plants that do not move.
In other words animals and plants are different and require different nutrients to grow and thrive.
I've never seen a fruit tree flex their pecs and biceps, have you?
I've also never seen a head of lettuce run away from a rabbit trying to eat it.
If you have then please send me the video, as long as it is not on Tik-Tok.
I’ve never seen this probably because animals and plants are different and require different nutrients to grow, thrive and survive.
I say "probably" just to be nice. I could use stronger words but I am in a good mood today and sometimes I actually can be nice. Don’t ask me to define “sometimes’.
If you don't believe me then maybe do an experiment.
Try planting your feet in your backyard, or if you want to annoy your neighbor plant your feet in their backyard, and plant your feet deep enough to get some of the nutrients from the soil.
Next try and get as much sun as you can, and ask a family member or your neighbor to put nitrogen fertilizer around your feet and to make sure you are watered daily. Then let us see whether you grow or wilt. Maybe you need to be sprayed with some pest repellent as well to keep the bugs from eating you.
{ DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME OR ANYWHERE - It's obvious sarcasm but I hope you get my point}.
Our human body structure and functional movement is due to our muscles, bones, organs and connective tissue which is much different than what composes plants. Muscles, bones, organs and connective tissue are composed of proteins, fat, water and minerals. I don't know about you but last time I bit into cauliflower I did not chip a tooth from biting into a cauliflower bone. And the cauliflower was not able to run, swim or fly away to protect itself.
Above is another take on the USDA Food Pyramid if we go by their sponsors.
Humans need protein and while there is a small amount of protein in plant matter, most plant protein is not as bioavailable or absorbable as animal protein. Also animal proteins are more complete proteins that resemble what our human body needs, more so than plant proteins which are less than complete proteins.
Sooo, we need to focus our diet/nutrition on making sure we get the right amount and type of protein to remain healthy and grow strong. It is much easier to get this protein from things that can run, swim or fly away from you as they contain the type of protein our body needs. This amount can be different for everyone, so work with your healthcare professional who knows you best and understands these concepts.
Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!
As always questions and comments welcome.
If you are celebrating an upcoming holiday, what healthy foods will be on your table?
For me, while I write this substack blog, I have an Organic GrassFed Ribeye Roast in the oven. I have never made this before so hopefully it comes out delicious. If it does you will probably hear all about it. If not, well then you probably won’t!
Dr H can you recommend where to find organic grass-fed beef? I shop at Mom’s and Whole Foods but Mom’s is limited on the cuts and WF’s seems to carry more meat that is not organic. Thank you so much.
The main issue with SAD(Standard American Diet), isn’t that a majority of the population is vegan/vegetarian, and that the majority of their calories/protein come from plants. The main issue is a diet that is mainly composed of processed foods full of sugars, seed oils and refined carbohydrates. This is the prevalent driver of metabolic dysfunction, not that they eat too many apples.
