There will always be debates and preferences over diet and lifestyle. That’s actually one of the things that makes life fun and interesting. As long as people can discuss and debate, agree to disagree at times and then go enjoy a meal together, well then life is good.
But when some of our medical associations cling to past arguments that not only don’t help but can make things worse, well, then I have an issue.
I was surfing online and came across a tweet thread concerning diet recommendations for Diabetes.
FYI: Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, Obesity, Overweight- these are all symptoms of the same metabolic issue, so what is written next most likely pertains to all of the above.
I don’t appreciate when national medical organizations play the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil game when it comes to generalized recommendations.
Every day I see people asking the American Diabetes Association (ADA) why they continue to recommend a high carbohydrate diet? Their answer is usually this:
I think they may have missed the class that showed the following:
Dietary Carbs —> Raises Blood Glucose ((A No-No for Diabetics))
Excess Dietary Carbs —> Excess Glucose —> Elevated Insulin —> Increased Fat Storage ((Weight gain which worsens Diabetes))
Excess Increased Fat Storage —> Organ Fat Storage —> Aging/Rusting of your Organs ((Increased risk of heart disease, stroke, cirrhosis, kidney failure, etc))
All of the above greatly increases the aging process. So if you want to get old quicker, just become Diabetic, PreDiabetic, Obese or Overweight.
But it all starts with EXCESS dietary carbs.
There are also other factors:
Excess Inflammatory Fake Fats (vegetable and seed oils)
Inactivity
Genetics
But the biggest factor is preventing, slowing down or even reversing Diabetes is following a healthy diabetic diet, and by this I do NOT mean the diet of the ADA.
And it looks like the ADA does not want to even engage in conversation/dialogue with people, doctors who use lower carbohydrate diets with great success for managing their diabetes.
After a few complaints from others Dr. Attar was unblocked.
It’s not just me and Dr. Berry and Dr. Attar asking the questions and not getting true discussion in response. I will add some others responses from the twitter thread for you to read.
Well that is the same advice/eating plan given to me by Diabetic Educators from a Center of Advanced Medicine Diabetes Center that made my T2D explode and progress into full blown Metabolic Syndrome using an Insulin pump to bolus as needed.

As a #T1D that practices #carnivore, that's more carbs recommended in a day than I would eat in almost 2 months! I remember following those recommendations and I had unpredictable blood sugars. Can you imagine telling someone who can't process glucose to eat so much of it?

Thinking about getting gastric bypass surgery? Try a low carbohydrate, adequate protein, and high fat diet for 6 months, then decide. I just saved you $50,000.
—
As an organization the ADA should be insistent on discouraging consumption of high glycemic carbs, especially refined carbs. Their approach is unconscionable.

Hey everyone. What do you think about this recipe from the ADA?
26 grams of carbohydrate, essentially pure sugar, and it has the seal of approval of the ADA.

Yep that was a double shake my head in astonishment.
The above is an excellent example of why I mostly ignore professional medical societies recommendations. They are so captured by industry that financially supports them which makes their messages biased and usually not healthy.
My advice:
Do NOT accept anything anyone says to you without thinking and questioning and looking for the bias in their advice, especially when it comes to your health
It’s really a shame where this country has gone with respect to healthcare, but that is the present reality.
Segwaying into lunch….
I was at the office Monday and at lunchtime, my usual first meal of the day, I had a craving for a burger. But I am lowcarb so if I go out for a burger I have to make a few changes.
So at lunch I drove to a nearby Wendy’s only to find that they only had their drive in open and I did not feel like getting in a line of 20 cars for a burger. Burgers don’t taste as well after inhaling the car exhaust of 19 cars ahead of you, none of them being Teslas. So instead I drove a few miles to Burger King, where kids are king and home of the whopper, and where they will make your burger your way. Sorry I watched too many TV commercials when I was younger.
I went inside to order and I did have to repeat my order a few times as they don’t get many people ordering a burger like I do. It went like this.
DrH: “ May I have 2 double bacon cheeseburgers, NO BUN, and with just tomato and onion please.”
BK Clerk: “ So you want the two burgers without the rolls"?”
DrH: “Yes, that is correct.”
BK Clerk with a quizzical look on her face: “OK. I think I will go back and make that myself for you because I don’t know how to explain it to the cook.”
DrH: “OK, that would be nice of you. “
BK Clerk: “ So it’s 2 double bacon cheeseburgers without the roll”
DrH: “Yes, but with onion and tomato. That’s it.”
BK Clerk: “ OK, I got it. Would you like fries with that? Or a drink?”
DrH: “ No thank you. Just the burgers.”
Very nice clerk. She so wanted to get it right.
She went into the back where I could partially see her putting together my order. A minute later I had to speak up loud enough for her to hear but not too loud for others to hear, that I did NOT want ketchup, mustard or pickles, as well as no roll. She heard me, smiled, threw out whatever she just did, and started over. A minute later she brought me my lunch. I said thank you and left.
I got back to the office and the above pic is the lunch on my plate.
Notice anything missing?
She forgot the bacon.
I guess they get so frazzled with no bun they forget the bacon.
Whatever happened to:
“Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us, all we ask is that you let us serve it your way?”
Well it was my first Burger King burger in probably 20 years. It was as I remembered it. But it was a burger so I was happy.
And best of all it was just about zero carb and somewhat filling. I think next time I will get 3 double cheeseburgers without the bacon, and maybe they will get frazzled again and I will get extra bacon instead??
Do ya think the ADA would ever suggest people eat at Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy’s or any of the other popular burger joints? I have proven to you that you can eat a burger or two or three and improve your diabetes.
Have you taken to eating burgers without the buns yet?
What are your favorite burger joints?
Are there any other medical or health organizations you also choose to ignore?

I’ve been doing that for quite a while actually. My favorite is a cheesesteak hoagie without the roll. Last week we ate at a local tavern that actually had lettuce wrap burgers on the menu. Some people are starting to catch on.
Elevation Burger, Five Guys, and a local place called Old School are our faves. None of those places batt an eye when you ask for no bun.
