I think it’s very important to make a clear distinction between vegetarianism and veganism. I imagine most of us on this forum know the difference, but for many in the general population, they think it’s interchangeable. Most vegetarians are the Avo-lacto variety with more in recent times also including seafood(I think this is problematic as far as strict definitions, but a small price to pay for better food choices). Vegetarianism exists in different cultures around the world, and has done so for a long time. Veganism on the other hand is a very modern phenomenon, that centres mostly in affluent western societies. For many, veganism is an ethical choice, which they are of course entitled to. That being said, veganism outside of personal ethical choices, is not ideal nutritionally, nor is it naturalistic. We are not herbivores, we simply don’t have the physiology for it. Can the human body survive on a vegan diet, yes, but can it full optimise without constraints, no. I have yet to meet a vegan for a lifetime(30+ years) without supplementation, that is truly optimised.
