Following a very serious, life saving surgery at a renowned NYC hospital my extremely health conscious daughter-in-law and I were discussing the disappointing menu options and came to the conclusion that perhaps hospital food is geared to those “food” choices most likely to be consumed. There is a great deal of emphasis on eating while patients are healing, without emphasis on healthy choices. Many are simply comforted by the familiar and so more likely to eat. Those who are more discerning and lucky enough to have the option, really need to have their loved ones provide real food from outside the hospital kitchen during recovery. I wonder if the hospitals would offer healthier choices if those were part of a more mainstream diet.
