Name it Blame it Tame it
Difference between Traditional and Functional thought in Health and Wellness
You are having a health and wellness issue.
So something to ponder about the issue.
Who names it?
Why do they blame it?
How do they tame it?
Let’s use an example
Name it- Osteoporosis
Yet, Osteoporosis is still named/defined as low bone density via a DEXA scan by most Traditional healthcare professionals.
Of interest is how DEXA scans became much more widely used soon after the first #BigHarma prescription drug treatments became available. But let’s not get into that now.
Blame it-
Blame it (Osteoporosis) for weak bones leading to fractures that greatly impact quality and quantity of life. The blame gets your attention and almost makes you want to pick a side, as if there is a good and a bad side. But with the blame, they (the Traditional powers that be in our healthcare sickdom) don’t go into or tell you what causes Osteoporosis and how to reduce your risk, especially if it is any of the popular much prescribed #BigHarma medications.
Tame it-
Traditional care tames it (Osteoporosis) with #BigHarma medications that tend to make a marker (DEXA SCAN) of Osteoporosis look better. But does the improved marker truly reduce the risk of fractures and reduced quality of life? That is a discussion they never want to have. I’ve looked at the data. It’s not very impressive.
Now let’s look at the Functional side to Osteoporosis.
Name it- Normal aging of the bones.
Blame it- Nah… why should I blame something that is a part of natural aging?
Woah there Doc. Are you saying we should just allow our bones to get weak and brittle?
Nope.
Tame it-
In Functional medicine, I like to look at the root causes of Osteoporosis and work on improving those risks and changing the balance from bone loss to bone strengthening.
Root causes of Osteoporosis:
Hormonal imbalance/decline
Improper Nutrition
Imbalanced Metabolism
Imbalances Gut and immune system
Imbalanced Exercise
Improper Sleep
Excess Stress
Sunlight Avoidance
Looking at all the above factors and working to get them back to a healthier balance can greatly reduce your risk of the:
Name it- Osteoporosis
Perhaps, just perhaps we should consider shifting the blame to the present traditional health and wellness beliefs that Osteoporosis is inevitable and only treatable with #BigHarma treatments.
Perhaps, just perhaps we should consider Taming it by working with a Functional doc who can help you rebalance all the above mechanisms.
I hope you know someone who could help with the above……….
