This is part of the 2023 IMW Summer Challenge, but this post is free to all subscribers, not just paid. Perhaps we can get some more people to join the challenge?
Can anyone truly define hunger?
If I ask 5 people their definition of hunger I would probably get 5 different answers.
That's OK.
If you ask 5 different Functional Medicine docs a question, you would probably get 7 different answers.
I really just want to know what it is that YOU believe is "hunger”?
What is your definition?
Then I want to know something else and I want you to think about it deeply.
This is Challenge #9
It’s a thinking challenge.
Sorry for that but improving your health and wellness doesn’t occur if your head is in the sand. If you want to move towards optimal health you need to think critically. Don’t expect others to do it for you. Critically think, ask questions, hear many different answers, and then think what may work best for you. Don’t assume what you have heard or been told in the past is actually true. It might be. It might not be.
Ready?
Here are your challenge questions.
Answers please in the comments or IMW Chatroom.
1- Why do you eat?
Are you truly hungry OR
2- Are you eating out of habit?
3- Are you eating because you are supposed to eat?
4- Are you eating because you are following the rules someone put out?
5- Are you eating because you are stressed?
6- Are you eating because you lack time later in the day and you are trying to fit it in?
7- Are you eating because you fear not being able to later?
8- Are you eating because food is in front of you?
9- Are you eating because others around you are?
10- Are you not hungry when you begin eating but then get hungrier as you eat?
11- Are you eating because you do not want to waste food?
12- Why else other than above do you eat?
The real Challenge is to write down every time you eat WHY YOU DECIDED TO EAT at that moment.
Be honest.
You might be surprised.
Then let's discuss in the IMW Chat Room or in the comments section.

I eat because I’m hungry or not, sometimes out of habit. I’ve eaten when stressed or emotional. I’ve also eaten when food is in front of me or when others around me are. I know that is why I weigh about 10 pounds more than I should. It can be a struggle.
I eat in order to refuel, since we need it sustain life. I also happen to enjoy it quite a bit, and find it tasty. There is a broad spectrum of what is defined as hungry/hunger.
