I think the answer is yes.
So instead of today bloviating all about gut health, instead I am just going to list some food? ingredients that if they are listed on the ingredient label of food, or even on a supplement or shake you use, perhaps you should refrain, as those ingredients might?? be causing your gut harm. When the gut is harmed, or thrown out of balance, it can not only give you gut symptoms that you all know about, but also affect your nutrition, metabolic, hormonal, immune and inflammatory systems of your body.
So for those of you who only use certain type of gas or motor oil as you want to protect your car, or who only eat organic food to avoid chemicals etc, perhaps you should also look at labels of foods as well.
Here is a list, and it is by far not the only things that should be on here, but it is a start.
Carboxymethylcellulose
Polysorbate 80
Carrageenan
Propylene glycol
Locust bean gum
Guar gum
Xanthan gum
Sorbitan monostearate
glyceryl stearate
maltodextrin
cellulose gum
PEG
Sorbitan
Sodium Laurel Sulfate
Now, as I alluded to there are many more. Perhaps just think about having to take a chemistry class and learning all the chemical sounding names. Well, if an ingredient sounds like it came from chemistry class, perhaps you should not be eating it??
Just sayin….
Now I can not take credit for this post. Most of the information in this post came from GeneticlifeHacks blog. The author of genetic lifehacks looks at the interaction of genetics and your health with plenty of links to actual research articles as well. Definitely worth your time if it interests you. This began my journey into further personalizing your health journey using genetics.
As always, questions and comments welcome.
Thanks for referencing my article on the gut mucosal barrier!
I'm going to add to your list (and update my own article today :-) with a 2023 study that showed that microplastics - the microscopic bits of plastic that are in so many foods and water - also decrease the gut mucosal barrier.

I try to avoid chemicals added to food. I started to make my own pickles and hot sauce. Next I will be fermenting vegetables that I like.
Hopefully, this will increase my gut health.
