I hope everyone had a nice Valentines Day. I enjoyed a nice Valentines Day meal by making a Grass Fed Ribeye smothered in buttered onions.
It was #Delicious
But today is not about Ribeyes.
It is about continuing my education. It is about always keeping an open mind and trying to learn from others.
Does it seem like all I do nowadays, is attend conferences? Strangely I actually enjoy traveling to places I have not been or that I have enjoyed before, while at the same time learning from others what they know to see if I can use any of that information to improve the work I do at the IMW. I just luv starting off posts with a really long run on sentence. It brings out the ADD in readers.
So, are you still with me????
I’m back from another conference, Genetopia in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ve never been to Nashville before so I figured, why not? I’ve also been wanting to bring more Genetic evaluations and treatment to the IMW for awhile, so hopefully that will occur real soon.
Sooooo…..
Why a genetics conference?
How can that help me help you?
Well, it comes down to helping you figure out your health risks and how to reduce them.
There are 3 main factors that drive disease risk.
1- Behavior and Lifestyle choices- these should be under your control, if you so chose.
2- Environment - where you live and work. Is it a healthy or unhealthy environment? Not quite as easy to control without a bit of work and planning.
3- Genetics - you are born with these, but what you may not know is that your genes are not the overall determinant of your health and wellness.
How you behave in the environment you live in can either turn on or off genes. Our goal is to turn ON the good genes and turn OFF the not so good ones, or at least put them on easy to use dimmer switches.
Genetopia provided some insight into what genes to check and how to see if they are good, equivocal or not so good.
You may not know this but I had my genes tested and I have two very interesting genes. The first gene was supposed to instruct my body to grow to a height of 6 foot 2 inches tall.
The second gene was supposed to give me a full head of curly red hair late into my 70s.
Ummm, I don’t think those two genes are expressing themselves in me.
Do you?
Sorry I am laughing right now as I write this thinking of myself as 6 ft 2 inches tall with a full head of red hair. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
So my main takeaway from Genetopia is to test the genes that are actionable, meaning, with changes in environment, lifestyle and nutrition, we can turn on the good and turn off or at least decrease the expression of the not so good genes. That is what I hope to help you accomplish moving forward at the IMW, if you are interested. Gene testing melds perfectly with the IMW systems approach to improving your health.
So how bout now I just give a quote from the conference that stuck with me.
“We are all living in the aquarium fish tank, and it is pretty dirty, and, we don’t know how to get the filter going.”
What does this mean?
We are living in a world full of toxins, most of which are unavoidable. We need to learn how to best get our body to absorb proper nutrition while safely clearing out any toxins that have built up. Our body can do this on a daily basis if we treat it right. But some people can do this better than others. Genetic testing may help us understand why some people get affected more than others, which then allows us to work on a personalized health and wellness plan to circumvent the not so good genes while amplifying the good ones.
I’ll probably write more about this in a future Common Sense Health and Wellness post. But for now, if you are an IMW member, feel free to ask me more about evaluating your genetics next time you are in the office or send me a Spruce message.
I will be away again in 2-3 weeks for another conference, this time in Austin Texas. I’ve never been to Austin, I am mostly a carnivore, and I like the conference topic, soooo, away I will be going again.
As always, comments and questions welcome.
I volunteer to be a guinea pig for some genetic testing if you need one. 😁
Ps we got some good pipikaula and dried fish in Hawaii - Laulau Ono no Ka Oi (top notch). Kalua pig Ono hey Dr Steve we should have BBQ competition. Lol
