As I celebrate the Jewish New Year, La Shana Tova to all my Jewish readers, there is no better way than to sit at the dinner table eating a home made brisket.
Let me tell you the toughest part of the day is when the brisket is in the pressure cooker and the house has that brisket aroma all day, well, it’s tough to not overeat.
Especially when you cut the brisket in advance, always against the grain, and then let it cool in the gravy until it is time to reheat it later.
But let me get back to Overeating.
Overeating got me to thinking.
I know that can be dangerous, but it can also be worthwhile at times too.
Overeating chronically, especially of processed foods can lead to EXCESS fat storage in your body. You actually want most of the excess fat to be stored safely in your fat cells as that is where your body prefers it.
But not all of the excess goes into your fat cells.
But if you hit your safe fat cell storage limit, YET still have more fat to store, this EXCESS fat then starts to get stored in UNSAFE areas, like your liver, pancreas, other organs, nerve cells, artery walls….
I think you get the picture now………
We call this visceral fat and we really do not want too much of it as it, how can I say it, mucks up the natural workings of those organs.
One disease process I am sure you have heard of, Diabetes-Type 2 or Adult Onset Diabetes occurs when Visceral Fat stores have been overloaded or in excess for a chronic prolonged period of time. That period and what defines excess is different for each person and can be somewhat modified by changes in diet, exercise and lifestyle. The Institute for Medical Wellness (IMW) Advanced Wellness Testing (AWT) helps to determine where you are on the journey towards Diabetes, or can we now say “On the journey towards chronic EXCESS”.
This should be making you think:
Am I healthy without excess?
Am I PRE-Diabetic?
Am I PRE-PRE-Diabetic?
For all the English majors out there, am I correct in saying “Am I” or should I say “Are I”, or should I just stop asking and just write the blog post?
Yes, the IMW and the AWT can help determine where you are with regards to EXCESS and guide you away from Diabetes.
PSST- Do you know that Diabetes really really increases the aging process?
That means Diabetes makes you get old faster. Actually even Pre-Pre-Diabetes can increase the aging process.
PSST again- Do you know that Type 2 Diabetes is reversible usually WITHOUT medications?
Yep, this means that most Type 2 Diabetics can REVERSE their EXCESS, DIABETES without making Big Pharma richer. That may be bad for your retirement if you have invested in Big Pharma but perhaps you should instead invest in your own health??
PSST one mo time- Do you know that most Diabetes medications make your lab results look better but do NOT actually treat the cause of Diabetes, which if you have read thus far relates to chronic EXCESS causing chronic OVERLOAD in your fat cells and organs?
So your lab numbers look better but most likely you are still aging faster than others who do NOT have EXCESS or DIABETES.
So while I will definitely be enjoying my homemade brisket tonight, and if any leftovers remain then tomorrow as well, I will also try to be aware to not overdo it and move towards EXCESS and Diabetes.
BTW- You don’t become Diabetic overnight.
It is a continuum that moves towards Diabetes the longer you remain in EXCESS.
So there is never a bad time to start reversing the EXCESS, improving your health and slowing down the aging process.
As always, questions and comments welcome.
While I am known as being just a tad sarcastic at times, I just want to say how much I appreciate all the subscribers to my Substack, Common Sense Health and Wellness, especially the paid ones! Your support is so greatly appreciated.

Our evaluations have a special focus on root cause evaluations and treatment guidance of Nutritional, Metabolic, Inflammatory and AutoImmune health issues. We use a panel of Advanced Wellness Testing that include traditional, nutritional and functional testing to help guide you on your wellness journey. Our review of laboratory work is a combination of traditional, nutritional and functional thought and looks to guide you to improved health using more natural lifestyle choices and less pharmaceutical interventions. Our goal is to help you to improve your health and slow down the aging process naturally.
We offer a free no-obligation Meet-N-Greet to see if we are a fit to work together. The Meet-N-Greets can be virtual or in-person.

I think the occasional larger than normal portioned meal(in this case brisket!) is not problematic, and is probably even helpful. When we are consistently at a caloric deficit over time, our body will naturally start conserving(it thinks it’s in the famine part of “feast or famine”). We can circumvent this metabolic adaptation, by occasional boosting our caloric intake(it’s “feast” time, maybe we just killed a woolly mammoth, or a nice slow cooked brisket). The key word here is “occasionally”, and we are treating ourselves to larger portions of the healthy foods we normally eat(so more eggs, steak, fish etc., not junk).
Happy New Year!
