The 2023 IMW Summer Health Challenge has been challenging all the challengees’ to think thru many different aspects of what makes them healthy and what makes them sick, and how to work thru ideas on how to improve their health.
One of the bigger topics was a combination of diet and exercise as we age, and how what we eat and how we exercise actually changes as we age and how what works for you when you are 25 may not work the same when you are 45, 55, 65 or 75.
I came across a good thread on exercise and protein needs as we age, so click me here.
The discussion revolved about what type of protein is best, especially as we age. Click the above link to read it. It is short. It may surprise you.
A few things occur as we age.
As we age we produce LESS growth hormones to keep us strong. Growth hormone is also responsible for helping us repair all the little traumas we have in day-to-day life.
As we age we tend on average to exercise less and thus do not keep up our muscle mass as well. This can lead to frailty as we age.
As we age for some reason we tend to eat less protein or the wrong types of protein. Perhaps instead of saying the “wrong” types, I should say “less efficient” types of protein. Protein is the building block of muscle, bone, organs and our immune system, so I have trouble figuring out why the health authorities seem to diss protein so much, or at least warn you about eating protein.
As we age our Gut function may not work as well. So even if we eat enough protein, our gut may not be able to absorb it as well. It’s not always a matter of how much we eat, but more of how much we absorb and utilize of what we eat that counts.
The red in the above pic is the muscle. See how as we age, we have less muscle.
As we age we generally just have more wear and tear on our body that affects all of the above items.
Sooooooooooooo……
Perhaps instead of taking it easy as we age and letting nature and frailty develop, instead we work on improving our diets, our gut function and our muscle function so we can enjoy our life just as much at 75 as we did at 45.
A Common Sense Health and Wellness Newsletter without some sarcastic or funny meme is a wasted newsletter section.
As always, comments and questions welcome.
Great quote by Mark Sisson in that thread: “if you continue to advocate that the elderly have meat taken away from them, you are scum.” 🎤
Thank you, this is right on time for me as I have seen several articles recently saying the opposite (around growth protein p21) that didn't make sense to me. (And really appreciate the fullscript $$)
